It’s the time of year that vegetable gardeners love; the smell of fresh dirt, the feeling of tearing open a seed pack, and breaking out the trowel fills many of us with joy. Veggie gardening is not a naturally born skill, it takes practice and a lot of trial and error. If you’re a first time gardener or just looking to get back into the soil, we have the top tips for making your garden a success!
Tip #1) Most vegetables need 6 hours of sunlight daily. When setting up your garden, make sure that it is getting plenty of light exposure to keep your plants happy.
Tip #2) The easiest plants for beginners to grow are tomatoes, peppers, beans, cucumbers, zucchini, peas, radishes, spinach, and herbs. If you are nervous about starting your veggie garden, start with these basic vegetables to get your feet wet.
Tip #3) Soil will make or break your garden. Quality soil for a veggie garden is a must. Find a high grade topsoil or potting soil in containers rather than local soil. The golden rule: add 1 to 2 inches of organic material to your garden area and mix well to a depth of 6 inches.
Tip #4) Read the directions! Seed packets are a wealth of information and will give you the details you need to be sure you are planting your vegetables correctly.
Tip #5) Use mulch! Mulching your plants helps to keep the weeds at bay and the soil moisture consistent. If you’re looking for a mulch idea - use grass clippings (as long as they don’t contain weed killer).
Tip #6) Plant at the appropriate time. Plants can be sensitive and need to be planted at the right time of year. If you’re not sure when to plant in Montrose, use this guide: https://www.almanac.com/gardening/planting-calendar/MT/Bozeman
Now that you’ve got the basics, it's time to dig in (pun intended!). Get out there and have fun. We can’t wait to see how your garden grows.
